Not too boxy was the brief given to us to design this luxury home. .........The result......not a straight line in sight
The site perfectly suits this style, as the canal wraps around the home on 2 sides, with a park and beach on the northern side and only one neighbour to the west.
The result is a home where once you enter through the gatehouse and into the entry court you instantly feel like your in your own resort. The front garden is planted with lush tropical plants, there is a timber walkway and stone stepping stones. Straight ahead is the entry water feature that leads you to a boat shaped entry pavilion. The roof of which is constructed of exposed timber rafters held up by large stacked stone pillars.
The huge timber and glass pivot door open you into the entry pavilion. The floor is imported Egyptian Stone. From the entry you look into a central courtyard. This courtyard has a water feature pool with a sandy beach, a large pandanus tree and planter boxes that are surrounded by water.
As you enter the home through the entry pavilion, you pass a fully stocked home theatre room with
custom made curved lounge chairs, a huge projector and recessed led lighting. The room is painted in black with black carpet, for a true theatre experience.
The guest room is next to the theatre, this room has external access through the timber walkway. It has it own ensuite and walk-in robe, and has stunning views over the eastern canal.
Along the hallway further you pass a home office with custom made benches that curves around the walls. The outlook is over the main pool area, which is adjacent.
The floor of the hallway has 3 glass strips imbedded in the floor. Water passes from the courtyard pool to the main pool through these floor
recesses.
The main pool area has a large pavilion island with a daybed and spa bath.
The pool area opens from the living, bbq and bar area, creating a real indoor outdoor feel to the home.
The central living area of the home has a 2 storey high void with a curved concrete bridge over.
There is also 2 storey high windows looking out to the southern canal and also the courtyard pool area.
Further along the southern canal side is the kitchen, with its timber veneer cabinetry, by Minka Joinery with stone tops and inbuilt marine fishtank. The kitchen area opens up to an outdoor living area complete with fire pit and inbuilt seating through a set of curved bifolding doors.
The eastern end of the home has a living area that flows into a bar area with café style seating and then out to an outdoor dining and bbq area. This area also has a bifolding door that open to the south, but can be closed to protect from the cool winter southerly breezes.
The majority of the living and outdoor area is positioned to maximise the northern eastern aspect.
The upper level of the home consists of 4 bedrooms, an activity room and a gym, all of which having curving walls and canal views.
The master suite consists of a boat shaped main bedroom area, with exposed timber rafter ceiling, thatching style wallpaper ceiling lining, a large open resort style ensuite and a open style walk in robe, bar area and sitting area.
The views from the master bedroom are expansive with views to the north, east and south canals.
The home has been designed in a way that it is large overall in size but each area or room is still cosy and intimate and full of interesting shapes and
materials.
Some of the interesting challenges in the construction of the home was the set-out of the free-form curves, the construction of the elliptical roof shapes, the suspended concrete floor construction with the curved bridge and stairs, and also the placing of the airconditioner unit under the floating master bed.

The Master Ensuite has been designed as the centre piece of the open resort style master bedroom. Once you enter the room past the open custom made robes and bar area you gradually see the open resort style ensuite through the stained slat timber screens.
The design methodology of the ensuite was to create not a tiled bathroom, but the feel of a natural timber and stone Balinese courtyard garden.
This has been achieved through the use of large timber look tiles to the floor, natural stone to the walls, elliptical stone bath and basins along with timber veneer lantern style cabinets.
The bath is surrounded by pebbles and stepping stones, along with plants and garden lighting to give an outdoor feel.
The bath is filled via a ceiling mounted rose, which creates a clean column of water that extends from the bath to the ceiling.
The stepping stones lead to a private shower area.
There is also a private toilet.
